“Risk Management and Security in Help Desk”

Virtually every call to a Help Desk has security implications. Some are patently clear when, for example, a frustrated user reports a virus infection or web site defacement, but others can be more difficult to assess when the symptoms are complex, intermittent, or subtle. In every case, Help Desk personnel have an immediate obligation to address the problem with realistic (and secure) solutions. In the longer term, they also have another equally important responsibility, to report incidents and remedial action to both operational and security authorities to support the organizational risk management program.

In this regard, the Threat and Risk Assessment (TRA) is an invaluable tool to assess and categorize incidents in the first place, prioritize remedial action, and ultimately incorporate the findings in the larger context of a comprehensive risk management program.

Joining us for the October HDI Ottawa meeting is guest speaker John Clayton from Bell Canada to discuss TRAs and their application to Help Desk operations.

John Clayton joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1963. After graduating from the Royal Military College, he trained as a computer programmer and systems analyst.

Four years later, he transferred to the Security Branch of the Canadian Forces, where he served in a variety of security, counterintelligence and policing positions across Canada. In his last assignment, he was the Departmental Automated Data Processing (ADP) Security Authority at National Defence Headquarters.

Since leaving the Canadian Forces in 1989, he has worked with five departments or agencies in the Public Service: the Ministry of the Solicitor General, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Public Works and Government Services Canada, the Treasury Board Secretariat and the Communications Security Establishment. During this time, he has performed varied functions as a Senior Policy Analyst, Project Security Director, Departmental COMSEC Authority and Departmental Security Officer.

After his retirement from the Public Service in January 2007, he accepted a position as a Senior Security Analyst with the Risk Management Consulting practice at Bell Canada.
